This is the best fried pork leg that I have tried so far. It is located in Gurun, Kedah. Good thing is not many people know about this place except the locals. Why? Because you don't need to wait for damn long for the food! :)
As you can see from these pictures, the restaurant's name is called "Xong Yuan Seafood" but it is parked in the "Ta Choong" coffee shop. You can look for this coffee shop first as it is easier to be seen.
Food (Fried Pork Leg) - 9/10
They fry it and it is very crispy. I like most about is it's gelatin. Some people call it pork collagen. It is in white color or colorless like a gel kind of thing beneath the pork's skins. You know what I mean?
If they know how to cook, it is very sticky one - really like a gel but for those who doesn't know how to cook, the stickiness is not that strong. Anyway, I love this pork leg very much! If you don't like too much of gelatin/collagen, try pork hand (i.e. the front legs) instead. It has more meat but less gelatin/collagen.
Food (Others) - 7/10
Other foods is like normal food at Chinese restaurant. It is really just normal to me.
Environment - 7/10
Just normal, quite clean :) No air conditioner.
Price - 8.5/10
Price to me is cheap because the food here is very big portion. I usually cannot finish the pork leg and pack it back for the next day homemade porridge cooking. Believe me, try to put the pork legs into your porridge cooking, it is so~~~~~ delicious!
Overall - 8.5/10
Have to give 8.5/10 because the fried pork leg / hand is really very nice! You must try it if you have chance travel to north or maybe on your way to Alor Star.

Famous Homemade Laksa and Chai Kueh in Kulim
This is the very famous homemade "Laksa" and "Chai Kueh" that everyone knows in Kulim. It is located in Kilang Lama, Kulim.
In fact, the "Chai Kueh" is the best "Chai Kueh" that I have ever eaten. The skin is not thick. Somehow those not so nice "Chai Kueh" usually has a very thick skin and little vegetable. The "Laksa" there is not bad but I think "Penang Laksa" is better than this! :)
There are 2 houses side by side. The one on the right sells "Chai Kueh"
and the other on the left sells "Laksa".
Food (Chai Kueh) - 9/10
There are 2 types - green and yellow. I like the green one. I don't know how it is called in English. This vegetable is called "Ku Chai" in Hokkien. The yellow one is called "Mengkuang" in Malay I think. :)
You can't eat there but only take away is allowed. :) So what I usually do is I take away and just go to the next Laksa house on the left. Everyone does that actually. :)
Food (Laksa) - 7/10
As mentioned, I preferred the Penang Laksa than this but anyway if you want to try a different taste of Laksa, it is worth to try. It is kind of unique also. :)
Overall - 8/10
You must come here to try if you ever drop by Kulim or maybe when you're exploring the north. It is worth to try especially the Chai Kueh"! :)

Eat Village Egg in Sungai Petani - Homemade Breakfast
In Sungai Petani, there are lot of homemade food especially for breakfast. I just found this special because it offers half-boil "Village Egg" which I don't know where can find it now except in my hometown Sabah.
Village egg means those eggs are taken from the chicken which raised at open space (not in the cage) and this is usually at village. That's why they call it village egg. :) In Malay, it is called "Kampung" egg which is what the locals call it. In English, it is called "free-range" egg.
Food/Price - 7/10
Village egg is really nice, it really tastes slightly different from those you can buy in grocery store and I believe it is healthy too because no hormone injection? They sell toast too but okay only, not very special as compared to village egg.
They also sell other stuff like dried Noodle and dried Kway Teow. I think the taste is so so only. Maybe just 6/10. :) A good place for simple breakfast in Sungai Petani..
For drink, somehow in Sungai Petani, all are very bad. So, just order if you're thirsty.

Best Wantan Mee in Sungai Petani - Seng Huat Kedai Kopi
Best wantan mee in Sungai Petani is is located at Jalan Bakar Arang and the coffee shop name is Seng Huat. The owner of this wantan mee is called "Ah Niu" - translate to English is "ah cow". :)
A very special and unique thing about this wantan mee is you need to take the number after you make your order and this number will be repeated after it runs over. They have a lot of customers and usually you can wait more than 1 hour. This is the the thing that I don't like here. So to avoid waiting for more than 1 hour, I recommend you to go there before 8 am. :)
Food/Price - 8/10
If compare to the wantan mee in Penang at new cathay cafe, the wantan mee here is less oily but overall I think both are very good. It is just different style. I like both of them. The price is cheap like normal coffee shop that you can find it Sungai Petani.
Drink - 5/10
Drink is suck here. If you not believe, try it out.
Environment/Service - 7/10
Not sure if they can do anything to cook faster because famous and nice wantan mee usually takes longer time to cook? lol
Overall - 7.5/10
I like to come here usually during weekend. Must try if you haven't tried wantan mee in Sungai Petani!

Most Famous Chinese Seafood in Sungai Petani - Tai Kar Restaurant
Tai Kar restaurant is the most famous Chinese seafood restaurant in Sungai Petani. However, it is hard to find this place. In fact, you can't find the "Tai Kar" because it is within the "Restaurant SP". You need to search for the "Restaurant SP" first!
Food - 7/10
Food is not that bad but I guess that is the best in Chinese seafood that you can find in Sungai Petani. The price is reasonable too.
The one on the left is called "Deep Fried Tafu Kerabu" and it is very unique. You can it this a try.
This is very special dish too - Tian Ji (flog) and they cook this with "Chicken Essence" which is kind of unique. However, the meat is not fresh so it doesn't really taste that good. When cooking "Tian Ji" (flog), the flog must be alive rather than frozen, then it only tastes good.
This is pissing prawn but cook like this with egg is not nice although it is special. :D I suggest you to order different kind of cooking style either just plain steam or baked.

Famous Laksa in Sungai Petani - Kuan Ah Kedai Kopi
Local people in Sungai Petani always tell me this is the most famous laksa in Sungai Petani. After I tried it, I think it is just normal. Of course, I will still think the Penang Laksa is better. However, the taste here is a little bit different. You can give it a try. This shop is very near to the Second Street Hawker Center.
Food - 6.5/10
I know my friend sure screws me but honestly that is is based on my taste. I do not really enjoy very much on this laksa. Some homemade laksa in Sungai Petani is actually better than this. What I don't like about it is I can't see the fish shape. I know some people like this kind of laksa but for me, I prefer can see the fish meat.
Price - 9/10
Yes, most price here is very cheap. I order laksa with vegetable (means without the laksa's noodle), it costs me only RM 2. How can that be so cheap?
I can't complaint much with such a cheap price. Worth it a try and see if you agree with me. It is still a famous laksa in Sungai Petani. Everyone from Sungai Petani sure knows about this shop.

This place is very near to the Second Street Hawker Center. If you drive, I recommend you to park your car either in Jalan Bank or Jalan Padang and just walk it over. Opposite the immigration office, there is a street which is not drawn in the map. I think this street is the "Second Street". You can just use this street to walk through to Jalan Pengkalan from Jalan Bank.

Second Street Hawker Center in Sungai Petani
Everyone who stays in Sungai Petani should know this place. I don't the know official name for this place because I can't find any. In fact, I think it doesn't have any. Local people here just mentions this place as "Second Street". Probably it means the second street of the Sungai Petani town. Some also called this place "Nice Food Street". I also heard being called as Pengkalan Street Hawker center. Maybe that is the official name?
Food/Drink - 6.5/10
I'm not a big fan of this place as most food and drinks are normal. Good thing is you can find almost all kind of food here includes poh piah, fried keow teow, keow teow soup, laksa, ice kacang, curry mee, clay-pot chicken rice and a lo more.
Environment - 7/10
Quite a clean place, I have no complaints or any concern on the environment here. It is like a typical hawker stall in Malaysia.
Price - 8/10
Price is cheap. In fact, cheaper than most food that you can find in Penang. :)
Depends on your expectation, as I said it is just a normal hawker center. If you're not local in people in Sungai Petani and would like to try new thing, you may try this hawker center. There are other must try food in Sungai Petani and I will blog about that later. :)
