Best and Unique Tom Yum Noodle Soup in Penang

This kind of Tom Yum you can only get it in Penang and not other places. I will say this is one of the must try food in Penang. First impression, it doesn't smell good. It smells like a pee indeed  :) But after you get used to it, it is really tasty and spicy. If you enjoy spicy food, this is for you! If it is not hot enough, you can add more chilies which you can get it directly from the stall.

Food/Overall - 8/10

It is a hawker food style. There are only 2 places that you can get this type of Tom Yum which I find the best in Penang. First one is the Food Court at Sunshine Square and second one is the Sunshine Market which is also very nearby, the other side of Jalan Mayang Pasir (see map below).

These 2 owners are brothers. You can order pork meat or fish meat or mixed pork and fish meats. I usually order the mix one. Yummy!

Famous Curry Noodle at Taman Free School Penang

One of my favorite curry noodle is at Taman Free School, Penang. You can give it a try if you're looking for curry noodle around the Penang island.

Food / Environment / Price / Overall - 7/10

Environment is okay, not very dirty and basically it is usual penang food court which consists many variety of Penang food. Curry noodle is famous among the local.

By the way, the curry doesn't look that nice as it tastes!!!

Another famous food is called "PoPiah"  which I find it so so only but a lot of people like it. You can also give it a try!

Duck Porridge at Kampung Jawa - Wahong Cafe

Kampung Jawa is famous with Char Kway Teow but I also find this Duck porridge very unique.

Food - 7/10

Not really like extremely nice but not that bad. Sometimes I just order it when I miss "duck" a lot. Hope you have chance to give it a try too. Oh by the way, it says from Beijing, I guess it doesn't mean to be. :)

Best Char Kway Teow in Penang - Kampung Jawa

I think this is the best Char Kway Teow in Penang, which is located in Kampung Jawa. Although the most famous one of course is at "Lorong Selamat" but I find it sucks and expensive. Somehow it is no longer as good as it used to be. So, the fried Kway Teow at "Lorong Selamat" definitely not worth it and some more you could wait for hours.

The coffee shop name is called "WaHong Cafe" which is located at "Solok Kampung Jawa 6" as shown in above picture. It opens pretty early, I think even before 6 am. So every time when I have very early morning meeting, I come here for breakfast. It opens until noon too for lunch.

Food (Char Kway Teow) -  8/10

It comes with 2 big prawns but the taste of the prawns is better than the one in lorong selamat fried kway teow and it also cheaper in terms of the price. One very unique about this Char Kway Teow is, when the serving comes, it is like one kind one. The kway teow is only half or sometime just one quarter of the plate as shown in the picture below. I like to call this "k ying" (Cantonse slang refes to odd looking shape) char kway teow.

Drink - 7/10

The drink is not bad, better than a lot of coffee shop in Penang. As usual, I enjoy my "Teh Si" very much.

Summary

I can only say "Must try Char Kway Teow" if you come to Penang. :)

Eat Village Egg in Sungai Petani - Homemade Breakfast

In Sungai Petani, there are lot of homemade food especially for breakfast. I just found this special because it offers half-boil "Village Egg" which I don't know where can find it now except in my hometown Sabah.

Village egg means those eggs are taken from the chicken which raised at open space (not in the cage) and this is usually at village. That's why they call it village egg. :) In Malay, it is called "Kampung" egg which is what the locals call it. In English, it is called "free-range" egg.

Food/Price - 7/10

Village egg is really nice, it really tastes slightly different from those you can buy in grocery store and I believe it is healthy too because no hormone injection? They sell toast too but okay only, not very special as compared to village egg.

They also sell other stuff like dried Noodle and dried Kway Teow. I think the taste is so so only. Maybe just 6/10. :) A good place for simple breakfast in Sungai Petani..

For drink, somehow in Sungai Petani, all are very bad. So, just order if you're thirsty.

Famous Laksa in Sungai Petani - Kuan Ah Kedai Kopi

Local people in Sungai Petani always tell me this is the most famous laksa in Sungai Petani. After I tried it, I think it is just normal. Of course, I will still think the Penang Laksa is better.  However, the taste here is a little bit different. You can give it a try.  This shop is very near to the Second Street Hawker Center.

Food - 6.5/10

I know my friend sure screws me but honestly that is is based on my taste. I do not really enjoy very much on this laksa. Some homemade laksa in Sungai Petani is actually better than this. What I don't like about it is I can't see the fish shape. I know some people like this kind of laksa but for me, I prefer can see the fish meat.

Price - 9/10

Yes, most price here is very cheap. I order laksa with vegetable (means without the laksa's noodle), it costs me only RM 2. How can that be so cheap?

Overall - 7/10

I can't complaint much with such a cheap price. Worth it a try and see if you agree with me. It is still a famous laksa in Sungai Petani. Everyone from Sungai Petani sure knows about this shop.

This place is very near to the Second Street Hawker Center. If you drive, I recommend you to park your car either in Jalan Bank or Jalan Padang and just walk it over. Opposite the immigration office, there is a street which is not drawn in the map. I think this street is the "Second Street". You can just use this street to walk through to Jalan Pengkalan from Jalan Bank.

Second Street Hawker Center in Sungai Petani

Everyone who stays in Sungai Petani should know this place. I don't the know official name for this place because I can't find any. In fact, I think it doesn't have any.  Local people here just mentions this place as "Second Street". Probably it means the second street of the Sungai Petani town. Some also called this place "Nice Food Street". I also heard being called as Pengkalan Street Hawker center. Maybe that is the official name?

Food/Drink - 6.5/10

I'm not a big fan of this place as most food and drinks are normal. Good thing is you can find almost all kind of food here includes poh piah, fried keow teow, keow teow soup, laksa, ice kacang, curry mee,  clay-pot chicken rice and a lo more.

Environment - 7/10

Quite a clean place, I have no complaints or any concern on the environment here. It is like a typical hawker stall in Malaysia.

Price - 8/10

Price is cheap. In fact, cheaper than most food that you can find in Penang. :)

Overall - 6.5/10

Depends on your expectation, as I said it is just a normal hawker center. If you're not local in people in Sungai Petani and would like to try new thing, you may try this hawker center. There are other must try food in Sungai Petani and I will blog about that later. :)

It is located in the city area, very near HSBC bank and this hawker center is opposite of the Sungai Petani imigration office. When you turn into "Jalan Bank", you can start to look for parking spot. If you can't find any parking spot, you may go to another street - Jalan Padang looking for more parking spot.

Best Wantan Mee in Penang - New Cathay Cafe

I think that is the best "Wantan Mee" - Wonton Noodle that I had in Penang. The shop name is called "New Cathay Cafe" which is located near the Hotel Vistana in Penang and specifically located in one of the apartment, Taman Bukit Jambul Block A.

However, sometimes the "Wantan Mee" can lose it's quality (I think is because the owner doesn't change the cold water too often). In case you do not know, to cook a very good "Wantan Mee" you need the cold water. You cook half way the noodle and you put it in the cold water all the sudden, then you cook it again and it gets repeats for few times. The timing determines how nice is the noodle. If you go to those not so nice wonton noodle hawker, you can tell the quality difference!

Food (Wantan Mee) - 8/10

Yes, this is the stall - just order it and you won't regret it. You can order dry one or soup. For first timer, I recommend you to try the dry one first and if you have a second chance, you can try the soup one. The soup, I would probably give 7 out of 10. :)

There are other food as well such as curry noodle, "hokkien" noodle, and fried "kuey teow" but all are mostly normal. Probably just 6 out of 10, I will give. :)

Drink - 7/10

Drink is not that bad, I always order "Teh Si" - a tea that mixed with evaporated milk. You can order "Coffee Si" too - coffee that mixed with evaporated milk. Overall, I think is okay but if you compared to Hong Kong for this kind of drink, I think the of course the Hong Kong's one is better.

Environment/Service - 7/10

It is quite a clean place and I have no complaints. Of course no air conditional. :)

Price - 8/10

I give 8 is because the price for most food and drink are considered quite cheap in Penang. Cheap and nice food, who doesn't want?

Overall - 7.5/10

I've been going here for breakfast very often and yet not bored. Yes, almost forget about it, please don't go too early or too late. It is opened only in the morning! :)
